Diagnosing Small Intestine Cancer

Tests for Small Intestine Cancer Diagnosis

We will also list the advantages and disadvantages of each test.

Blood Tests

Which blood tests are performed?

  • Vitamin D deficiency test: Vitamin D deficiency is common in patients with small bowel cancer.

  • Cancer antigen test (CEA): This test measures the level of a protein called CEA. CEA levels may be higher in patients with cancer.

  • CA 19-9 test: This test measures the level of a protein called CA 19-9. CA 19-9 levels may be higher in patients with cancer.

What do the test results mean?

  • Blood tests alone are not enough to diagnose small bowel cancer.

  • High levels of CEA or CA 19-9 can indicate many different conditions, including cancer.

  • A biopsy is necessary for a definitive diagnosis.

How often should tests be done?

Blood tests may be done regularly at your doctor's discretion.

Stool Tests

Which stool tests are performed?

  • Faecal immunological test (FIT): This test checks for blood in the stool.

  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan: An MRI scan uses magnets and radio waves to create detailed images of the abdomen and pelvic area.

Endoscopy

  • Capsule endoscopy: A camera inside a capsule that is swallowed records images of the small intestine.

  • Enteroscopy: A thin tube inserted by the doctor through the mouth or anus records images of the small intestine.
